Awards that recognises upcoming musicians in the country

By Gloria Masia The 6th South African Upcoming Musician Awards (SAUMA) 2019, has done it again for the sixth time, awarding upcoming South Africa musicians and celebrating their achievements. The event promises to host a music workshop for the nominees, where musicians can learn more about how to thrive in the industry. This year, plenty of upcoming artists walked away with the awards. The event took place at The Market Theatre, renowned for world-wide apartheid plays. Remaining authentic was one of the elements that were required for one to win an award. This event did not only award upcoming artists but also created a platform for upcoming musicians to perform their music and get their talent recognised. This year’s host was Sphiwe Mtshali who is well known as Bash on e.tv’s soapie, Rhythm City together with his wife Charmaine Mtshali. "Another black female-owned law firm off the ground"

By: Gloria Masia Meet the corporate commercial attorney and founder of Mapongwana Attorneys, Belinda Mapongwana. Guguletu born and raised, Belinda had wanted to be a lawyer since childhood. Together with her family, Belinda moved to Khayelitsha and that’s where she spent her teenage years and she has never left ever since.  She studied a social science degree in 1995 and later completed her law degree at the University of Cape Town. Belinda was awarded a scholarship to study for a Master’s law degree in Amsterdam which kick-started her career and grew her love for law even more. Like many ordinary graduates, she served as an intern at the United Nations Office, in Geneva. Decades later, she runs her own boutique law firm that  offers commercial advice to companies in  Sandton  and  has managed to bag major clients who would have probably opted for bigger law firms. Profiling: "Pedi Rap is the future"

By: Gloria Masia Limpopo born and raised songwriter and rapper, Mokapoteni AKA “King of Pedi Rap” has taken Johannesburg by storm with his music. Although he took a trip from Chebeng village all the way from Moletji to Johannesburg, to pursue his soccer career in 2004, playing for Kaizer Chiefs development team before he joined Orlando Pirates academy.   “I was captain of the team and when I went into the music industry, I decided to call myself ‘Mokapoteni’ which means ‘Captain’ and that is how my stage name came about” says Mokapoteni. Tuks Senganga being one of his inspiration, Mokapoteni started his music career at the age of 16 and later started working at a studio where it grew his interest in music and exposed him to prominent producers in the music industry.
