Awards that recognises upcoming musicians in the country

The 6th South African Upcoming Musician Awards (SAUMA) 2019, has done it again for the sixth time, awarding upcoming South Africa musicians and celebrating their achievements. The event promises to host a music workshop for the nominees, where musicians can learn more about how to thrive in the industry. This year, plenty of upcoming artists walked away with the awards. The event took place at The Market Theatre, renowned for world-wide apartheid plays.

Remaining authentic was one of the elements that were required for one to win an award. This event did not only award upcoming artists but also created a platform for upcoming musicians to perform their music and get their talent recognised.

This year’s host was Sphiwe Mtshali who is well known as Bash on e.tv’s soapie, Rhythm City together with his wife Charmaine Mtshali. Together with them was the Rhythm City crew who was one of the sponsors of the awards. Not only were they one of the award’s sponsors, but they play the music of upcoming artists on their soapie.

The category for best pop was taken home by Dolf for his song named, African girl. He is a Limpopo born and raised, although he took a trip to Johannesburg because he was nominated. Some of the Limpopo born and raised were a group of three called “The Nutty Lion” who also grabbed an award for Best Reggae category.

Singer and songwriter Khosi was one of the musicians who were nominated for best female and Afro-soul category, although she didn’t win an award, she said that she was happy that her talent was being recognised and that is exactly what will keep her going. She further explained that everyone was a winner, whether they won an award or not.

One of the night’s performers was ‘King Fire Lunatic’ who said that he was not nominated for any category, but that didn’t stop him from attending the awards as he planned to perform for the audience and have everyone to listen to the song he wrote. The song is called “Kgale Ke Kopa” meaning I have been asking for a while now. He said the inspiration behind the song is to every person who feels like their dreams have been delayed. “This song is for all the hustlers who have been trying for a long time, do not give up on your dreams. It does not matter how long they are taking, just don’t give up. What matters is that you are hustling.”

This was sure a tremendous event for all the upcoming musicians and was attended by prominent people as well. Recognising and celebrating all the upcoming musicians to not give up on their dreams and talent.
