Legendary Jaz Singer Sibongile Khumalo Passed Away. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Iconic jazz and opera vocalist Dr Sibongile Khumalo, who on Thursday evening, 28 January. According to a statement posted on her Instagram page, the world-celebrated Mzansi singer succumbed to stroke-related complications after a lengthy period of illness.
Veteran musician Marah Louw is one of those who has been left devastated by the death of jazz icon Sibongile Khumalo (63). “I thought why is this happening? I was just shocked. It is difficult when you hear such news. Even words of condolences don't seem to have meaning any more. It is just shock. When ever you hear the phone ring, you fear the worst,” she said.
After the news broke, social media flooded with condolence and tribute messages. Official South African president's twitter account also announced the sad news. "This is a moment of great sadness for all of us who were mesmerised and moved by the power, sensuality and improvisation of Sibongile Khumalo’s unique voice."
Legendary jazz and opera musician Sibongile Khumalo
was Born in 1957 in Soweto, and she is one of the most
celebrated artists in South Africa.
Khumalo rose to fame when she won the Standard Bank
Young Artist Award at the Grahamstown Arts Festival in 1993.
Since then she has graced local and international
stages including singing at former President Nelson Mandela’s 75th birthday and
1994 inauguration.
She has also enchanted audiences with her
performances of “The 3 Faces of Sibongile Khumalo” in 1992; performances with
the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1994 and 1995 as well as Handel’s Messiah
with Lord Yehudi Menuhin in 1995.
Khumalo also led the South African and New Zealand
national anthems during the World Cup Rugby Final in 1995.
Her accolades include four South African Music
Awards and three FNB Vita Awards.
She is also a recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga
in Silver, which was bestowed on her in 2008.
At the end of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz
festival in 2019, SABC reporter Ndundu Sithole caught up with Khumalo.
